Fear

'Some friends play at friendship, but a true friend sticks closer
than one's nearest kin'. Proverbs 18:24
(New Revised Standard Version)
Fear,
not strength,
afflicts the solitary care-giver,
quivering lip,
swallowing hard the pain,
in loneliness.

Dull of eyes,
quietly,
the anguish and pain
are buried
deeper than any grave
so others,
it is said,
may be protected,
their model untarnished,
the image intact.

While all around glistening eyes
that see
weep
for the courage squandered,
the pain not shared,
the trust denied
that would hold, bless, wait
and heal.
