Sandal Man

That day by Jordan,
it was his sandals
that focussed John’s thoughts
- the sandals of the One who was to follow
the Baptist’s own fiery trek

The sandals.
The sandals.

Sandals that trod Galilean dust
beside countless others worn
by blind, lame, forlorn, outcast;
Sandals on water!
Sandals on mountain ridges
(worn, yet dazzlingly white);
Sandals in donkey’s stirrups;
Tear-stained sandals perfume-splashed,
blood spattered
in Gethsemane’s darkest hour.
Sandals discarded for the final scarring
at Golgotha.

They had protected him,
as sandals always do,
eased his way,
until the time of necessary piercing,
the wounding of deepest sorrow
the gifting of truest joy.
